Education Program for Increasing Capability of Global Health Workforce

Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program

Dr LEE Jong-wook

Dr LEE Jong-wook (1945-2006) was a World Health Organization (WHO) Secretary General, who fought for disease control from a top strategic position and died a hero as ‘mankind’s physician.’  He cared for the society’s weak, by living a life of a ‘true physician,’ sacrificed himself for international health, cooperation, and volunteering.

Doctor Lee wanted to cure as many people as possible.  He started his international organization activity in West Pacific Ocean region office in a consultative body for leprosy patients.  For twenty years, he held a key post and produced impressive result. In 2006 May 22, while preparing for WHO general meeting, Doctor Lee collapsed due to overwork and died.  Throughout the world, people mourned for the death of the ‘the world’s greatest doctor.’

Dr LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program

Dr LEE Jong-wook fellowship program, in order to increase medical health manpower in developing countries, KOFIH from 2007 is enforcing an educational enterprise.  From 2012 this year, total 23 countries’ 278 health professionals participated in the training program. To help developing countries’ lack of education, Korea invited developing countries’ key medical professionals to Korea for various medical health education. During trainee doctors’ education period, the foundation gives educational aid to the trainees.  The trainees receive education through directing professors’ strict guidance.  The trainees will experience clinical on the spot visit, take lecture, participate in seminar in international prominent medical university and university hospitals. 

Yonsei University Severance Hospital

Yonsei University Severance Hospital was created in 1885 by an American missionary Doctor H. N. Allen as Korea’s first western medical organ from widespread relief house to Jaejoong won, severance hospital to present medical institute. As a leading medical agency after its foundation constantly caring for the citizen’s health, Yonsei Severance Hospital’s history is country’s Christianity, medical education and research. Hospital’s total staff includes 2,000 doctors, 5,800 general workers, in total around 7,800.  Total number of sickbed is 3,137.  Hospital’s all agencies form relations unified by ubiquitous information system, high-tech building, cutting-edge medical equipment as a foundation education, and research.

Training Content:

From beginning of Feb, trainees will receive one year of cultural experience, visit

medical facilities, receive clinical education, health university education, medical

health management education, and other various educational programs. Through

these educational programs, trainees will strengthen their ability, and understand

Korea’s medical technique and medical system.
