Consultancy Services
The Faculty
of Pharmacy has well qualified staff in literally all the branches
of pharmacy.
With the growing number of manufacturers and importers
of pharmaceuticals the quality of drugs supplied to the patient can no
longer be taken for granted.
The Faculty therefore has primary role in
assuring drug quality, a service it has been offering since 1984. In
the past four years (1999 – 2002) there were plans to strengthen
quality control services by re-equipping the laboratories.
In order to cater for the needs of the pharmaceutical industry, the
Faculty is obliged to have a small-scale drug manufacturing unit which
will study production-related problems assist the local industry improve
the quality of its product.
Commensurate with this objective the faculty
strategic plan includes the establishment of such a unit, which will
serve both as a training organ and for consultancy.
In the hospital set-up, the pharmacist is an important team member
and is expected not only to provide pharmaceuticals, but also to advice
on their use. This latter aspect is not well developed in this country,
despite an apparent need. Such services as adverse drug reactions monitoring
and therapeutic drug monitoring are, to a large extent, lacking. The
Faculty therefore plans to establish a custom-built hospital pharmacy
outlet and a therapeutic drug monitoring unit.
Alongside the Curriculum-review exercise is a plan to introduce continuing
education sessions for practicing pharmacists to keep them abreast with
current technological advancement in the field and to help them render
up-to-date services to the public.
